Got a Question? Learn more about the Grand Installation with our FAQ.

The Grand Installation is an important event whereby the outgoing Grand Master, installs or places into position, the new Grand Master who will act as head of The Grand Lodge of Western Australia for the next three years.

It is a spectacle of pageantry and tradition, which is open to the public and practised the same way as it has been since the commencement of the modern Fraternity.

The Grand Installation will attract around 600 local, interstate and international visitors, as well as public and media attention.

A Grand Master is a title of honour as well as an office in Freemasonry, given to a Freemason elected by the membership, to oversee a Masonic jurisdiction, derived from the office of Grand Masters in chivalric orders.

He presides over a Grand Lodge and has certain rights in the private Lodges that form his jurisdiction. In most, but not all cases, the Grand Master is styled “Most Worshipful Grand Master”.

The first Grand master appointed to office at the formation of the Grand Lodge of Western Australia, was the then Governor of WA, His Excellency Lieut. Col. Sir Gerard Smith K.C.M.G who was followed by some notable individuals:

• The Hon Sir J W Hackett, KCMG, JP, Member of the Legislative Council WA;

• His Grace the most Reverend C O L Riley, Archbishop of Perth;

• Dr. J S Battye, CBE, Librarian & historian;

• His Excellency Liet-Gen Sir Charles Gardiner, KCMG, Governor of WA;

• Howard Solomon CBE, Barrister and Philanthropist;

• The Hon Harry W Gayfer, AM, Member of the Legislative Council WA;

• The Ven Archdeacon, Stanley Threlfall, Archdeacon of Perth.

Yes, non-Freemasons are welcome to attend the Western Australian Grand Installation.
