Speak Up Award 2010
A speaking Competition for Year 5, 6 and 7 School Children
Aims
The aims of the Speak Up Award is to provide Years 5, 6 and 7 students with an opportunity to express their views confidently using appropriate speaking skills.
It encourages students to research and compose a speech that shows a depth of understanding of the topic.
History
The Speak Up Award was originally run by The Penguin Club of Australia, an Australian wide Woman’s Club.
It was inaugurated in 1987 in the North Eastern Suburbs and now encompassing the whole metropolitan area.
The public speaking competition is now run by the Grand Lodge of WA. Freemasons have a long tradition in encouraging our State’s youth to become strong leaders.

Rules
1. The award is open to school students in Years 5, 6 and 7 in the Perth metropolitan area. A maximum of three students per school may enter.
2. Students will present a speech of four minutes on a subject of their choice, on an issue that is of interest or concern to them as individuals living in today’s society. All components of the speech should be the work of the competing student. A warning bell will be rung at three and a half minutes.
3. The selection of students from each session will be based on the assessment by the adjudicators. Their decision, in all cases, will be final
4. A minimum of three adjudicators will be present at all sessions.
5. Guidelines for adjudicators and students will be those approved by The Grand Lodge of Western Australia.
6. Students, teachers and parents should note - adjudication marks / sheets will NOT be available at any stage of the competition.
7. Adjudicators may be approached for verbal comments at the end of their session at the first round only.
Assessment
Content
· Show depth of knowledge of the topic or treat a familiar topic in an original way.
· Demonstrate a component of research.
· Use continuity and development of ideas in a logical manner.
· Communicate with the audience by correct and effective use of language.
Presentation
· Use a variety in pitch, pace, pause, tone and volume with clear audible voice.
· Establish eye contact and rapport with the audience.
· Stand confidently and use gestures, palm cards and illustrations (if used) in a suitable manner.
Impact
· Achieve his/her purpose to inform, persuade, or entertain the audience.
· Display sincerity, credibility and speak with conviction.
· Capture audience attention through a strong introduction and conclusion, to maintain interest throughout the speech.
